Whitening results fade gradually. People commonly get several months to a couple of years, depending on habits. Protect the result by avoiding strongly coloured food and drinks and smoking for the first 48 hours, rinsing after kopi and teh, keeping up six-monthly scaling and polishing, and asking your dentist about occasional touch-ups.
What Affects How Long Whitening Lasts
| Speeds up re-staining | Helps results last |
|---|---|
| Daily kopi, teh, coffee or tea | Rinsing with water after dark drinks; using a straw for iced drinks |
| Smoking or vaping | Quitting, or at least cutting down |
| Red wine, cola, dark juices | Brushing about 30 minutes after, not straight away |
| Curry, soy and dark sauces | Six-monthly scaling and polishing |
| Skipping cleans, so plaque and tartar build up | Brushing twice daily and cleaning between teeth |
The First 48 Hours Matter Most
Right after whitening, your teeth pick up stains more easily. For the first 48 hours, try to avoid:
- Kopi, teh, coffee and tea (if you can't skip them, let them cool and use a straw)
- Red wine, cola and dark berry juices
- Curry, laksa, soy sauce, dark soy and braised dishes
- Smoking and vaping
Lighter choices for those two days: plain rice, chicken rice without dark sauce, fish soup, white bread, eggs, tofu, milk and plain water.

- Rinse with plain water after each cup.
- Drink iced kopi or teh through a straw where you can.
- Avoid sipping one drink slowly over hours. Shorter exposure stains less.
- Brush about 30 minutes after, rather than straight away.
When Is a Touch-Up Worth It?
When you notice your shade drifting back, talk to your dentist. Depending on your teeth, a touch-up might mean a short course with take-home trays or another in-clinic session. Don't use over-the-counter products of unknown strength on top of professional whitening without asking first.
Whitening Doesn't Change Crowns or Fillings
If you later get a crown, veneer or tooth-coloured filling on a front tooth, it is usually matched to your current shade. Many people whiten first and then match new restorations to their whitened shade. Ask your dentist about the order if you are planning both.
